The US bans ownership of big cats!
The timing for Tiger King was perfect, right after the US went on lockdown to try and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Mixed with the bizarre characters and an interesting concept, the show became a huge success. And that's no understatement - 34 million people watched in the first 10 days alone.
But surely, I wasn't the only one who felt extremely uncomfortable a few episodes in. These beautiful creatures are being abused and misused in every way.
Exploited for money and power, in the middle of controversy, being starved and forced into small cages... This is not how tigers (or any animal) are meant to be treated.
Clearly, I wasn't the only one who realized something needed to change.
In July of 2022, the US House of Representatives passed the Big Cat Public Safety Act. The Senate just passed it too, with unanimous support, and what's left is the approval and signature from President Biden.
This act is good, and frankly, long overdue. It protects the lives and safety of big-breed cats. And even some from the Tiger King series are supporting it (Carol Baskin).
